was a delay the police are crediting several agencies as working together. he is arrested monday over seven hours. police said witnesses able to provide a description of the suspect. more importantly that witness was able to give them a partial license plate number that police were able to use to track him down. he is suspected of 15 robberies in eight different cities crossing county lines. right now has only been charged in a county. the faces 11 counts of armed robbery dirty years in prison.

three people were killed after an s-u-v crashed on the southwest side. it happened around 8-30 last night near 31st and western. police say a man and two women were traveling east on 31st street when their jeep hit a curb at western. the jeep then hit a pole and landed on its roof. firefighters had to cut the victims from the vehicle. all three were pronounced dead a short time later. they've been identified as phillip barnes of romeoville yvonne tobias and leantwana rosebur both from chicago. the cause of the accident is under investigation. two children were removed from a home in elgin after police found them living in squalor with nine dogs.

four adults including cherly thacker and randy mc-donald. now face charges ranging from child neglect to animal cruelty. police were called to the home last week to check out a foul smell. they found dog feces throughout the home. the two children have been placed with relatives. the house has been condemned by the city of elgin. rules are busy disinfecting the area and watching the bedsheets separately. many of the detainees take part in work programs inside and outside of the jail. they will not be allowed to participate in those programs. also concerns of the staff.

the opera actor who was burned on stage could be released from the hospital sooner than expected. wesley daniel was performing a flame spitting stunt during a dress rehearsal at the lyric opera on monday when he wound up burning his face. he was taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition. but now doctors say daniel has improved enough to be released as early as today. they're comparing his second degree burns to a severe sunburn. daniel's fire stunt has been cut from the show, which opens friday. osha is investigating the accident. governor pat quinn is giving his third state of the state address at this hour in springfield. he's focusing on the state budget crisis. pension concerns and raising the minimum wage in illinois to 10-dollars an hour. he also is expected to support the marriage equality bill currently being considered by the senate and a proposed 25- cent sneaker tax to fund job programs for high school dropouts.

an earthquake in the south pacific triggered a tsunami that killed five people today.

the eight -point -0 magnitude quake struck off the solomon islands. four elderly people and one child died when strong waves triggered by the quake hit an eastern region known as the santa cruz islands. damage is still being assessed but the tsunami appears to have caused some damage and disruption at the local airport and nearby villages. a tsunami warning issued for several other countries was later canceled. the f-b-i has released new photos of the bunker where a five-year-old boy from alabama was held hostage for six days. authorities found two homemade bombs yesterday in the bunker where jimmy lee dykes was keeping the boy hostage and continue to search for more today. one was in the underground bunker, the other was in a p-v- c pipe that the hostage taker used to communicate with police.

dykes was killed in a raid on the bunker monday. the boy, named ethan, was rescued and today he is celebrating his sixth birthday. he was taken hostage last week when dykes attacked a school bus and killed the driver. ethan's school principal is confident he will make a strong recovery from the ordeal. school officials at midland city elementary are planning a party to celebrate ethan's safe return, and also to honor charles poland, the bus driver killed while trying to protect the children on his bus. school officials present and obama will travel to israel for the first time in his presidency. the white house has not announced a date for the trip. the television stations as

of america have decided to delay a vote on a proposal that could end the longstanding ban on openly gay troop leaders. a vote was expected today at the national executive board meetings. the organization said they need more time to get input from members. more than 70 percent of scout troops are affiliated with the church or religious groups. the pentagon could be making changes very soon in its benefits policy for same-sex couples. defense secretary leon panetta is expected to announce this week that same-sex spouses of service members will be granted some benefits that have been denied until now. those benefits could include housing on military bases,

military i-d cards, and consideration of a same-sex spouse and family in duty assignments. the bi-racial daughter of former segregationist, senator strom thurmond has died. essie mae washington-williams only revealed her identity nine years ago. she kept it a secret until after her father's death beause she "never wanted to do anything to harm her father." thurmond was a segregationist leader for decades. he died in 2-thousand-3 at age 100. essie mae washington-williams died of natural causes. she was 87 years old. still to come this midday more fallout for compounding pharmacies in massachusetts following last year's deadly meningitis outbreak. but first, coming up next, a new report about gun background checks and why there were less of them

the number of gun background checks fell last month as retailers ran out of guns. the associated press as background checks dropped 10% nationally in january as compared to december. aho and natural gas and oil production that includes for acting as the second-biggest source of greenhouse gases second only to power plants. here's why it is such a big concern. it is associated with methane leaks. methane is more efficient at trapping radiation.

[ male announcer ] yes, it is. that's the cold truth! chicago police are investigating a pair of overnight robberies on the north side. a man held up a 7-11 at lincoln and webster in lincoln park at two a-m. he showed the clerk a gun, took some cash, and got away.

an hour later, a man matching the description of the 7-11 suspect robbed a dunkin donuts on chicago avenue in the river north neighborhood. no one was hurt in either incident. a third man was ordered held on bail, in connection with a brutal murder in aurora. prosecutors say jose becerra of oswego helped his friends juan garnica and enrique prado dump the body of 18-year-old abigail villalpondo in the woods near montgomery last friday. police say abigail was killed at the mother of an alleged hazing victim is calling for the principal of maine west high school to be fired. the woman has requested to remain anonymous. in november, she filed a lawsuit on behalf of her son. she claims the boy was sexually assaulted, in 2-thousand-8, when he was as an atlhete at the school. with district officials seeking the dismissal of two coaches at maine west, the woman is calling for principal, audrey haugan to be fired. the woman claims haugan should have called police after learning of the incident, which may have prevented other problems. haugan has not yet commented. petitions calling for a limit on standardized testing are being handed out today at several chicago elementary and high schools.

the petition effort was organized by the "more than a score coalition". a group of parents and teachers of c-p-s students. they want to limit standardized testing in all grades and eliminate it completely from pre-kindergarten to second grade. they also want full disclosure including the cost of all 22 tests now being used in chicago public schools. a c-p-s statement says the tests are critical for measuring student growth, and helping teachers and principals identify student needs. lake michigan water levels are at an all-time low. according to the u-s army corp of engineers: the lake's water levels actually dipped lower than the previous record set in march of 19-64. the water is now six feet below the record high- that was set back in october of 19-86. one expert says it will take years of consistent rain to improve the situation and increase the water level. 300 employees will be affected but they will have a chance to transfer.

in medical watch. last year's deadly meningitis outbreak leads to shutdowns at nearly a dozen compounding pharmacies. the meningitis outbreak that led to 45 deaths was linked to a tainted steroid made by the new england compounding center in framingham, massachusetts. in the aftermath unannounced inspections were carried out at 40 pharmacies across the state. now, massachusetts health regulators have ordered eleven compounding pharmacies to partially or completely halt operations. 21 others were cited for minor violations. obesity can lower vitamin d levels in the body. researchers analyzed data from 21 studies involving a total of 42 thousand people. they report that every ten percent rise in body mass index led to a four percent drop in available vitamin d in the body. vitamin d is stored in fatty
